Finistère: an oyster with record weight harvested in Carantec

Un beautiful baby! Every year, in France, tons and tons of oysters are consumed during the end-of-year celebrations. For this Christmas 2021, one mollusk among many others stood out. The company Les Huîtres de Pen Al Lann, located in Carantec in Finistère, dredged a huge 2.22 kg oyster in mid-December, reports West France. A record weight, which beats the previous discovery by a few grams, which dates from October 2020, still in Carantec, but in a different operation.

In the fall of 2020, it was on Alain Morvan’s oyster farm in Carantec that the previous record mollusc was discovered. It weighed 2.2 kg, barely a few grams less than its successor.

A large 15-year-old mollusk

Gireg Berder, responsible for this company, revealed to West France that this oyster measured exactly 26.5 cm in length, 13 cm in width and 10 cm in thickness. Far beyond size 1 oysters, which, in terms of weight, can weigh up to 150 grams.

The more fleshy an oyster, the more time it has spent in seawater, and the more flavorful it tastes. Gireg Berder believes that it could have been sown in 2006 and then forgotten on the oyster farm after being buried in the sand. If his estimate is correct, the mollusk is therefore 15 years old. Note that a happy buyer was able to taste this exceptional oyster at Christmas, since it was sold. His price ? It’s a secret.
