The accident took place around 10:30 p.m. on a boulevard in Wattrelos, in the Lille metropolitan area, according to a press release from the firefighters.

The vehicle left the road, « hit a tree, and ended its trajectory in a fence, » a spokesperson for the North Departmental Public Security Directorate (DDSP) told AFP. The balance sheet reports « three male victims died, including two children », « one aged between 5 and 6 years old, and the other between 7 and 8 years old », and « two male victims, including a child » of unspecified age, taken to hospital in serious condition, said the DDSP. Their identity is not known at this stage. An investigation was opened to determine the causes of the accident.
