Jean-Marc Vallée, the director of the series « Big Little Lies » and « Dallas Buyers Club » is dead


Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallée, whose film Dallas Buyers Club won three Oscars in 2013, died aged 58, his agent Bumble Ward confirmed on Sunday (December 26th).

The latter said that the filmmaker was found dead in his cottage on the outskirts of Quebec City, Canada, arguing that his death was sudden without giving more details. “Rest in peace, Jean-Marc Vallée. The world is much less interesting without you ”, wrote his agency, Hive Communication Collective, on Instagram.

The HBO channel – for which he has directed several series – declared himself « Shocked by the news of her sudden death ». « Jean-Marc Vallee was a brilliant and conscientious director », she added in a statement released by The Hollywood Reporter.

« Jean-Marc had bet on authenticity, doing things differently », for his part, said his co-producer, Nathan Ross, in a press release. “The maestro will be missed, but it’s heartwarming to know that the beauty of his style and the power of his work will survive him. « 

Mr. Vallée was greatly appreciated by the world of cinema for his naturalistic approach, « Transforming true stories into successful fictions », describe The New York Times. Over the past ten years, he has directed many actors such as Reese Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Jean-Marc Vallée studied cinema at Ahuntsic college and at the University of Quebec in Montreal before co-producing his first success in 2005, C.R.A.Z.Y. But this is the movie Dallas Buyers Club, starring Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who made him a successful Hollywood director in 2013.

Several multi-award winning achievements

The feature film tells the true story of Ron Woodroof, a Texan who, after being diagnosed with HIV in 1985, fought for drugs that were then illegal in the United States. Dallas Buyers Club has won numerous awards, including the Oscar for Best Actor for Matthew McConaughey.

Jean-Marc Vallée also directed the successful series Big Little Lies in 2017, et Sharp Objects in 2018, for HBO. The premiere features Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep in a wealthy California town where violence flourishes.

“It’s true that my latest projects mainly feature women, explained Mr. Vallée in an interview with HBO in 2018. We go overboard to capture something that looks authentic. «  He then added that he preferred to let the actors express themselves, « Reacting to what they are doing, instead of being active and telling them ‘me, I will do that' ».
